Dr. Hendrik Muller Fonds study grant

You get a need-based grant that covers the gap in your budget when you go abroad for an internship, a research project, a full master's degree or a PhD. There is no fixed rate. The amount is worked out from the shortfall in your budget after you have used everything DUO offers you. DUO is the Dutch student-finance authority, and this includes the basic grant, the supplementary grant and the maximum loan. To give a sense of scale, in 2025 the fund paid out 706,650 EUR across 217 approved applications, roughly 3,257 EUR per student. Your own amount depends on your situation. The fund has supported Dutch students since 1941.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Dutch or Surinamese national, or you can show you are in the process of acquiring Dutch nationality.
• Degree so far: You have completed a bachelor's degree.
• Where you study: You are in a full-time university programme or an HBO arts programme (higher arts education).
• Grades: You have at least a 7.5 average in your master's subjects. If you are doing a full master's abroad, the 7.5 applies to your bachelor's subjects.
• Financial need: You can prove a shortfall in your budget even after using DUO to the maximum.
• Time abroad: Your internship, research or study runs at least 4 uninterrupted months abroad. Exchange programmes, conferences, study trips and symposia do not count.
• Timing: You apply before you leave. If you have already started your stay abroad, you cannot apply.

How to apply

You apply online through the fund's application form. For a full master's or PhD abroad there are fixed deadlines. For a start in September or October, apply by 1 April of the same year. For a start in January or February, apply by 2 November of the previous year. For an internship or research project of at least 4 months you can apply all year round, but always at least 3 months before you leave. Processing takes about 3 months.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut fairly narrowly. You must be Dutch or Surinamese, hold a bachelor's, have a strong 7.5 average and show real financial need after DUO. That keeps the pool smaller than for open scholarships. In 2025, 217 of 326 applications were funded, so prospects are solid if you clearly meet the criteria, document the shortfall and apply well before your deadline.
