What the Erasmus+ Staff Training grant gives you

You get a daily allowance of 100 to 120 EUR for training abroad within the EU, plus a separate travel allowance based on how far you go. The exact daily rate depends on the destination: 120 EUR for higher-cost countries such as Germany, France, Ireland, Italy and the United Kingdom; 110 EUR for countries like Spain, Portugal, Greece and Czechia; and 100 EUR for countries such as Poland, Romania, Croatia and Turkey. The allowance is paid for up to 7 days including travel days, even if your stay is longer. For placements outside the EU, the rate is 180 EUR per day with a travel allowance between 530 and 1,500 EUR, again for up to 7 days. The money comes from the European Union's Erasmus+ programme and is handled by Radboud University in Nijmegen.

You can use it for training courses, language courses, summer schools, job shadowing, research or lab visits, learning new techniques and international staff weeks. It does not cover conference trips.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are a staff member or a PhD candidate at Radboud University or Radboudumc, the university medical centre.
• Purpose: Your trip is for training, not for attending a conference. A separate travel grant covers conferences.
• Where you go: Any destination within the EU. In the United Kingdom, only specific partner universities and other non-university organisations count. Trips outside the EU are possible at selected partners, for example in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, South Africa and the USA.
• Length of stay: At least 2 days for EU destinations, or at least 5 days for the UK, up to 60 days. Travel days do not count.
• PhD candidates going within the EEA: If you travel within the European Economic Area, first check whether you qualify for an Erasmus+ grant.

How to apply

You apply through the Staff Mobility Grant Portal or by filling in the Erasmus+ Staff Training application form. Get it signed by your manager and your contact at the host institution abroad. Then send the signed form to the Erasmus office at least 2 weeks before you leave. If approved, you receive a letter stating your grant amount within two weeks.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is open only to staff and PhD candidates at Radboud University and Radboudumc, so the group that can apply is small and this is not a competitive scholarship in the usual sense. If you work at the university, have a clear training purpose that is not a conference, and hand in the required signatures on time, your prospects are good. Apply at least two weeks before departure, and for EEA trips check your Erasmus+ eligibility first.
