Erasmus+ at VU Amsterdam

You get a monthly grant to study or do a required internship abroad in Europe, plus a one-off travel grant. For a study exchange you receive 390 EUR per month in higher-cost countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden) and 330 EUR per month elsewhere in Europe. For a required internship the rate is 540 EUR or 480 EUR per month by the same country split. A study exchange is funded for 3 to 5 months; an internship for 2 to 4 months. The travel grant runs from 211 EUR to 395 EUR depending on distance, or up to 535 EUR if you travel by low-carbon transport such as train or bus. The money is EU-funded and handled by VU Amsterdam's International Office.

You can get 250 EUR extra per month if you have fewer financial means (and hold a Dutch DUO supplementary grant) or a disability or health condition. High extra costs, such as wheelchair-accessible housing or medical care, can be covered separately on top of that.

Who can apply

• University: You are a full-time, fee-paying student enrolled at VU Amsterdam.
• Study phase: For a study exchange you are at least in your second bachelor year or a master's student. You must have completed at least 90 ECTS credits before you leave.
• Internship rule: An internship is only funded if it is a compulsory part of your degree, not one you add yourself.
• Where you go: A study exchange must be at a university that has an Erasmus+ partnership with VU Amsterdam. Switzerland and the UK are not covered.
• Nationality: Open to students of all nationalities.

How to apply

You apply through VU Amsterdam's International Office (Outgoing Exchange Team), which selects who gets funded. For a study exchange your signed grant agreement and learning agreement are due by 1 November for the first semester or 1 April for the second. For an internship you register at least one month before it starts.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is open to any eligible VU Amsterdam student, so the requirements are practical rather than competitive. If you meet the credit threshold and your host is a partner university (or your internship is compulsory), your prospects are good. Funding is capped, so the number of funded months is limited and applying by the deadline matters. Choose a partner university early and submit your documents on time.
