What the Chevening Scholarship gives you

You will be awarded a fully funded one-year master's degree at a UK university. The UK government will cover your tuition fees in full. In addition, you will receive a monthly living allowance to cover your rent and day-to-day expenses. The rate is higher for London than for the rest of the country. The scholarship also covers your return flights in economy class, the visa fee, flat-rate allowances for arrival and departure, a travel allowance, and up to 75 GBP (approximately 85 EUR) for a TB test, if required. You will also take part in a networking programme that connects you with former scholarship holders, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations. The programme is run by the UK Government, which awards around 1,500 scholarships worldwide each year.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a national of one of the 160-plus countries whose nationals are eligible for the Chevening Scholarship. British nationals and persons with dual British nationality are not eligible to apply, with the exception of nationals of British Overseas Territories and holders of a BN(O) passport applying from Hong Kong.
• Where you live: At the time of application, you must be living in a country eligible for the Chevening Scholarship, not in the United Kingdom.
• Degree: You already hold a bachelor’s degree that is sufficient for entry to a master’s programme in the UK and which was completed at least two years before the application deadline.
• Work experience: You must have at least two years (approximately 2,800 hours) of professional experience gained since completing your bachelor’s degree. Full-time and part-time work, voluntary work and work placements are all taken into account.
• Field of study: Any subject is suitable, provided it is a one-year Master’s programme offered in the UK.
• University applications: You are applying for three different eligible degree programmes in the United Kingdom and will have at least one unconditional offer by the deadline.
• Return commitment: You undertake to return to your home country for at least two years once the scholarship has ended.
• Age: No age limit.
• No previous UK government scholarship: You have not yet studied in the UK on a scholarship funded by the British Government.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the online form at chevening.org during the annual application period, which runs from the beginning of August until 6 October (11:00 UTC). If you are shortlisted, you will attend an interview at a British Embassy or High Commission in the spring. The results will be announced in mid-June.

How realistic are your chances?

Chevening is one of the world’s best-known government scholarships and is open to applicants from over 160 countries, meaning that competition is very fierce despite there being around 1,500 scholarship places. Meeting the basic eligibility criteria is only the first step. The selection panels look for clearly recognisable leadership potential, as well as a sound rationale for your choice of degree programme and your future plans. If you have substantial professional experience and a compelling career trajectory, and you prepare your three programme choices carefully, you stand a real chance. A well-crafted, well-reasoned application is what sets applicants apart from the rest.
