International Master's Fellowships (Closed)

This scheme is now closed and no longer accepts applications. The final round ran in August 2021. It funded early-career researchers from low- and middle-income countries to train at Master's level. While it was open, it gave up to about EUR 140,000 (120,000 GBP) over 30 months: 12 months on a taught Master's course, then an 18-month research project. The grant covered a salary or stipend (a fixed monthly living allowance), tuition fees, travel, research costs, visa fees and relocation. For a taught course in the UK, the stipend was about EUR 18,700 per year (16,000 GBP) outside London, or about EUR 21,000 (18,000 GBP) in London. Elsewhere it matched local living costs. The funder was the Wellcome Trust.

Eligibility

• Nationality: You were a national of a low- or middle-income country, based on the OECD list.
• Degree: You held a bachelor's degree in a relevant subject and did not yet have a Master's degree.
• Career stage: You were early in your career with little research experience but a clear interest in research.
• Research topic: Your project focused on a health priority in a low- or middle-income country.
• Sponsor abroad: An eligible research institution in a low- or middle-income country (except mainland China) backed your application.
• Where you were based: You did your research in a low- or middle-income country, not the UK, Ireland or another high-income country. If you were already based in India, you applied through a separate Wellcome scheme.

How to apply

You applied online through the Wellcome Trust Grant Tracker. There were two rounds a year, and shortlisted candidates were invited to interview. The final deadline was 24 August 2021, with decisions in November 2021.
