Informatics Graduate School funding opportunities

What you get

You get a living stipend (a yearly living allowance) of about EUR 24,000 per year (£20,780 for 2025/26, rising each year), paid for three and a half years. Your full tuition fees are covered for three years, plus the enrolment fee for your fourth year. You also get paid sick leave and parental leave under standard UK research-council rules. The money comes from the School of Informatics, which awards roughly 6 to 8 of these PhD places each year. The funding does not cover visa fees, the Immigration Health Surcharge or moving costs, and there is no fixed budget for research training.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are applying for a research PhD hosted by one of the School of Informatics research institutes.
• Field of study: Any informatics research area works, for example computer science foundations, language and communication, or intelligent systems.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply. Both UK (Home) and international (Overseas) applicants can be funded, and your fee status does not affect eligibility.
• Start date: Your PhD must start in September 2026.
• Complete application: Your application must be complete, with all documents uploaded and a supervisor named before you apply.
• Not eligible: Research master's (MScR) and CDT programmes are not covered here. CDT programmes have their own separate applications and deadlines.

How to apply

You do not submit a separate funding application. Every complete PhD application is considered automatically. Apply through the University of Edinburgh's EUCLID system via the relevant Degree Finder listing. The Round 1 deadline is 18 December 2025, 23:59. Shortlisted applicants usually have an interview with their potential supervisor and an institute selector. Decisions are aimed for by April 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

With only about 6 to 8 places a year and eligibility open to strong PhD applicants worldwide, this is competitive. What decides it is a well-matched research proposal and a supervisor who backs you, since you must line one up before applying. If your proposal fits an institute's work closely and you apply in the first round, your prospects are realistic.
