Winston Churchill Top-Up Bursary (Churchill College, Cambridge)

You get an extra 1,200 to 2,300 EUR per year (about £1,000 to £2,000) on top of the standard Cambridge Bursary. Combined with the Cambridge Bursary of up to about 4,000 EUR (£3,500), the lowest-income undergraduates at Churchill College can receive up to roughly 6,300 EUR (£5,500) per year. The money is a grant, not a loan, and it repeats each year of your degree as long as you still qualify. It takes the pressure off finding paid work in the holidays and can free you up for unpaid summer internships. Churchill College gives the award, funded by donations from its alumni and friends.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are an undergraduate at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.
• Degree level: You are a Bachelor's student, not a postgraduate.
• Nationality and residence: You are a UK-based (Home) student eligible for the Cambridge Bursary.
• Financial need: Your family income is under £25,000 a year. This puts you in the highest need band and earns the full Cambridge Bursary. The top-up goes to exactly these students.
• Field of study: Any subject.

How to apply

There is no separate application. You apply for a Student Loans Company (SLC) maintenance loan and let the SLC share your household income data with the university. Do not tick the box that keeps it private. If that assessment puts you in the highest need band, you get the maximum Cambridge Bursary and are then automatically considered for the top-up.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut narrowly. You must study at one specific Cambridge college, be a Home undergraduate, and sit in the lowest income band. If you clearly meet those conditions, you do not compete for it. You are simply added on top of the maximum Cambridge Bursary. Churchill has an unusually high share of students from very low-income backgrounds, and the number of recipients has grown steadily, so a well-matched applicant has strong prospects.
