About this scholarship
University of Surrey Bursary
You get a cash payment of up to about 3,500 EUR per year (up to £3,000) if you study full-time for a Bachelor's degree at the University of Surrey and come from a low-income household. The money is paid in two instalments, usually in December and March. How much you get depends on your household income and the year you started. If you started in 2025/26 or 2026/27, you get about 3,500 EUR (£3,000) when your household income is under £10,000 a year, or about 1,400 EUR (£1,200) when it is between £10,000 and £25,000. The university checks your eligibility again every year, and the money continues as long as you still meet the criteria. You do not get it during a work placement year or when you repeat part of your studies.
Who can apply
- Degree level: You are a full-time undergraduate (Bachelor's) student at the University of Surrey.
- Nationality: You are a UK student, or an eligible EU student who normally lives in the UK.
- Financial need: Your household income is below the limit for your entry year (under £25,000 a year for 2025/26 and 2026/27 entrants).
- Where you live: Your home address is in one of the lower-income areas the university measures (IMD quintile 1 or 2 for recent entry years). The university checks this using the address from your UCAS application.
- Fees: You pay full tuition fees yourself. You do not qualify if the NHS or another sponsor pays your fees.
- Consent: You agree to a means test and let Student Finance England share your income details.
How to apply
There is no separate application. You need to be signed up with Student Finance England and to have agreed to the income check. If you meet the criteria, the Student Loan Company finds you automatically and confirms your bursary by email, usually around mid-November.
How realistic are your chances?
You cannot lose this to other applicants. If you meet every income, residence and enrolment condition, you get the money automatically, with no interview or selection round. The only real question is whether your household income and postcode fall within the set limits. Make sure your Student Finance England application is complete and you have given consent to the income check, because that is what triggers the payment.
