About this scholarship

What the Brighton Sports Scholarship gives you

You get a cash bursary plus practical support so you can train and study at the same time. The amount depends on your competition level. The award runs for one academic year, so you re-apply each year. Beyond the money you get strength and conditioning coaching, recovery services (hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and sports massage) and better access to training facilities. You also get one-to-one lifestyle mentoring (regular personal guidance on balancing sport and study), workshops for athletes, official Sport Brighton kit and free gym membership. The University of Brighton runs the programme. It is accredited by TASS (the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme), which means your tutors let you fit study around training and competition.

Who can apply

  • Sporting level: You compete at regional level or higher in your sport, or an equivalent standard.
  • University place: You already study at the University of Brighton, or you hold a conditional or unconditional offer to study there.
  • Study level: You are an undergraduate or postgraduate student.
  • Sport: Many recognised sports qualify, including disability sport.
  • Commitment: You are willing to support the Sport Brighton programme and, where possible, represent the university in BUCS competitions (the UK's inter-university sports leagues).
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply. There are separate forms for UK and Irish students and for international students.

How to apply

Apply through the online form for the relevant academic year. Choose the form for UK/Ireland or for international students. Applications usually close at the end of July. Provisional offers go out after the deadline. Final awards are confirmed after A-level results day, when any remaining places are filled.

How realistic are your chances?

Places are limited and vary each year. Awards are decided competitively on your competition level and the strength of the applicant pool, so a genuine regional-or-above record is what counts. If you clearly compete at that level and can show your results, your prospects are solid. Applying early helps, as final places are allocated once results are confirmed.
