NHS Exceptional Support Fund (ESF)

You get a one-off payment of up to about 3,450 EUR (up to 3,000 GBP) if you hit sudden, unexpected money trouble during your healthcare studies. This is a grant, so you never pay it back. The amount is not fixed. It depends on your situation and is paid once when your case is approved. The fund is run by the NHS Business Services Authority for the Department of Health and Social Care, on top of the wider NHS Learning Support Fund.

Who can apply

• Course: You study an eligible healthcare course at a university in England, such as nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, paramedic science, dietetics, radiography, occupational therapy or speech and language therapy. Foundation years do not count.
• Already in the LSF: You already qualify for the NHS Learning Support Fund and have had your Training Grant application approved. The LSF is the main NHS funding scheme for healthcare students.
• Student finance: You qualify for tuition and living-cost support from the Student Loans Company (via England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland). If you are a new student, you should normally have received your first loan instalment first.
• Not on the NHS Bursary: The older NHS Bursary rules you out.
• Sudden hardship: You face recent, unexpected financial difficulty, not just general rising living costs. There is a gap between your total income and your essential living costs that you cannot close on your own.
• Exhausted other help: You have already used your student loans and asked your university's hardship fund first.

How to apply

You download the ESF form from your NHS LSF online account and fill it in. You attach proof of your income, your spending and your last three months of bank statements. Your university checks and signs the form before you send it back by email or post. There is no fixed deadline, so you can apply at any point in the academic year. Claims are usually assessed within 15 working days.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competitive scholarship you win on merit. It is emergency help for a narrow group already inside the NHS Learning Support Fund. If you clearly qualify, have used up your other funding, and can document a real gap between your income and essential costs, your case has a genuine chance. Weak or incomplete evidence is the main reason claims fail, so mark your bank statements clearly and include everything asked for.
