Teaching Assistant PhD Scholarships (TAPS) / Bath Global Excellence Scholarship

Benefit

You get a fully funded four-year PhD in Computer Science or Chemistry at the University of Bath. Your Home-rate tuition fees are paid in full, and you receive a yearly living-cost payment of about EUR 24,000 (£20,780 in 2025/26, rising to £21,805 from October 2026). Computer Science and Chemistry scholars get an extra top-up on top of this. The payment combines a study stipend (a regular living-cost allowance) with a salary for your teaching work, and it includes paid annual leave. You also get a Training Support Fee of about EUR 1,150 (£1,000) each year for travel, equipment or fieldwork. In return you work as a teaching assistant for up to 400 hours a year: running tutorials, marking, giving feedback and helping in labs. You get a teaching mentor and compulsory teaching training before you start.

Eligibility

• Degree type: You study for a full-time PhD. There is no part-time option.
• Subject: Computer Science or Chemistry, in the Faculty of Science.
• Where you study: At the University of Bath, in person from the start.
• Fee status: You must have Home (UK) fee status under the UK government's rules. International students cannot apply.
• Grades: You have an excellent academic record and clear research ability.
• Teaching: You are willing and able to help teach in your department.
• English: You meet the university's written and spoken English requirements when you apply.

How to apply

First contact the academic you want as your lead supervisor. Places are filled on a rolling basis while funding lasts, with no fixed deadline. Then apply through the online PhD form. In the funding section, pick the Teaching Assistant PhD Scholarship option and give your project title and supervisor's name. Missing these details can rule you out.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is narrow: only Home-status students in Computer Science or Chemistry qualify, and you need a supervisor on board before you apply. The field is therefore smaller than for open scholarships. If you clearly fit those criteria and line up a supervisor early, your prospects are solid. Since places go on a rolling basis, apply while funding is still available.
