About this grant / loan

What Master's guidance gives you

You will receive a scholarship from the University of Edinburgh worth up to about 1,530 EUR (up to £1,300) for one year of your Master’s degree. This supplements the funding you are already receiving from a UK research council. These are the seven government bodies that fund research training: AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC and STFC. This top-up covers the difference between the University of Edinburgh’s Master’s tuition fees and the lower rate provided by a research council. The scholarship is administered by the University of Edinburgh.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are a Master’s student at the University of Edinburgh.
  • Existing funding: You are already a grant holder with a UK research council (AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC or STFC). This is the most important requirement. Without this, there is nothing that could be topped up.
  • Field of study: Any topic, provided it falls within the remit of your research council.
  • Nationality: You are from the UK or the EU.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The scholarship is automatically linked to your funding notification from the Research Council, so you will receive it simply because you are already receiving this funding.

How realistic are your chances?

The real hurdle lies in winning the Research Council’s award in the first place. If you have received this as a Master’s student in Edinburgh, this additional funding follows automatically. So if you already have funding from the Research Council, your chances here are practically guaranteed, and the entire competition takes place at an earlier stage.
