About this scholarship

Elite Sports Performance Scheme (University of Sheffield)

For one academic year at the University of Sheffield, you will receive a cash payment of up to 1,150 EUR per year (£1,000), as well as training and health services worth support package for elite athletes. Every athlete on the programme receives strength and conditioning training, free physiotherapy and massages, lifestyle coaching (personalised support in the areas of nutrition and psychology), access to a sports psychologist, and a free membership at the ‘Peak S10health’ gym. The cash prize of £1,000 is awarded to athletes at level 2. A small number of elite athletes receive the ‘Catalyst Award’ instead, which also includes one year’s free student accommodation. The programme is funded entirely by alumni donors and partners; past scholarship recipients include Olympic champions and Commonwealth medallists.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are studying at the University of Sheffield in the UK and are either continuing your studies or starting a new 2026 in September.
  • If you have not started yet: You must already have been offered a place on a degree programme at Sheffield starting in September 2026.
  • On campus only: You’re studying on campus. Distance learning doesn’t count.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
  • Sporting level: You compete at elite level, for example as an international or national representative, as a professional or academy athlete, as an athlete sponsored by TASS, or as an athlete in the GB youth programme.
  • Representing the university: You play for the University of Sheffield whenever possible.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the MUSE platform using your student or applicant login details. The application deadline is Tuesday, 1 August 2026, at 1. A panel comprising members of the university sports department and representatives of the student union will review all applications. Shortlisted athletes will be invited to an interview, which is expected to take place in early September 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This programme is very selective: candidates must both study in Sheffield and compete at a truly elite level, so the pool of applicants is small. The 2024/25 group accepted a total of only 26 athletes across all performance levels, meaning places are limited even amongst those who have qualified. If you can clearly demonstrate your competitive achievements and apply before the August deadline, your chances are good.
