What the Alumni Scholarship gives you

For a full-time Master’s degree programme at the University of Birmingham, you will receive 2,000 pounds (about 2,350 EUR) off your tuition fees. This is a reduction in your tuition fees, not a cash payment. This reduction applies once, in the first year. If your tuition fees are charged per module (as is the case with some part-time or online programmes), the amount of 2,000 pounds will be spread across your modules in the first year rather than being deducted in one go. You can combine this discount with other University of Birmingham scholarships and external funding. The University offers it to its own former undergraduate students who return to study a Master’s degree.

Who can apply

• Your background: You have obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Birmingham, either at its UK campus or its Dubai campus. All graduation years are taken into account.
• What you study next: A postgraduate degree programme such as an LLM, MA, MBA, MEd, MPA, MPH, MSc, PGCE, PGCert or PGDip. Research programmes (MRes, MA/MSc by Research, PhD), integrated and intermediate Master’s programmes, as well as postgraduate diploma programmes, are not included.
• Where you study: At the Edgbaston Campus in Birmingham or online. If you obtained your bachelor’s degree in Dubai, you are only eligible to enrol if you are studying at the Birmingham campus or online.
• How you pay: You are funding your studies yourself or are taking out a government loan for postgraduate students. State-funded degree programmes (e.g. an NHS scholarship) are excluded from this.
• Enrolment status: You have not yet enrolled on a postgraduate programme.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, including both domestic and international students.
• Grades: The selection process is based primarily on how well you performed in your Bachelor’s degree.

How to apply

First, apply via the standard course page for your chosen postgraduate programme. Then complete the separate form for the alumni scholarship, providing details of your previous and new degree programmes. The scholarship is not awarded automatically, so you must complete this form. There are two application rounds with deadlines on 30 April 2026 and 31 July 2026 (23:59 UK time). A panel will assess your application, usually within three to four weeks of the relevant deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

As only Bachelor’s graduates from the University of Birmingham who wish to undertake a face-to-face Master’s programme are eligible to apply, the pool of eligible candidates is naturally small. The number of scholarships is limited, and the university may close the application rounds early once all places have been filled. It is therefore advisable to apply in the first round. If you have a very good bachelor’s degree from the University of Birmingham and clearly meet the entry requirements, your chances are good.
