About this grant / loan

What you get

During an Erasmus exchange at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in Greece, you’ll be provided with affordable accommodation. Under the previous ‘Foreign Students’ Hostels’ scheme, the university accommodated most incoming exchange students in one of its two halls of residence and covered half the rent, meaning you only had to pay 50% yourself. Each year, around 500 exchange students arrived at AUTH, and around 60% were allocated a place in the student hall of residence. If no rooms were available, the university’s Department of European Educational Programmes would help you find private accommodation. On the current AUTH website, international exchange students are directed to a list of private rental properties, so the direct arrangement to cover half the rent in the hall of residence may no longer exist in the same form.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are coming to Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece.
  • Type of stay: You are an incoming exchange student, usually as part of the Erasmus programme, and will be spending part of your studies at AUTH.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Field of study: Any subject.

How to apply

The Department of European Educational Programmes at AUTH is responsible for accommodation and lists the available options at eurep.auth.gr/accommodation-list. Please organise this as part of your Erasmus exchange to Thessaloniki. Contact the department well in advance, as the offer of accommodation at half the usual rent may no longer be available.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a cash grant, but rather a housing allowance linked to an Erasmus place at a specific university. Consequently, only students who are already coming to AUTH can benefit from it. When the subsidised halls of residence were still in operation, most incoming students were allocated a room, which is very generous. The current listings mainly feature private rental flats; you should therefore enquire with your department well in advance to find out which options are still available.
