University of Coimbra - Faculty of Law - Luiz Cabral de Moncada Prize

Luiz Cabral de Moncada Prize

You will receive a prize worth 700 EUR, which will be paid in the form of a voucher for books or services from the legal publisher Edições Almedina, not as cash. It is awarded once a year for the best academic paper by a law student on a topic within the field of legal philosophy, i.e. the philosophy and theory of law, rather than a specific area of law. The Faculty of Law (Faculdade de Direito) at the University of Coimbra organises the prize, and Edições Almedina funds it.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are enrolled on the Bachelor’s degree programme in Law (Licenciatura em Direito) at the Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra. Master’s degree programmes and other degree programmes are not permitted.
• What you submit: You are to submit a written assignment on a topic from the field of legal philosophy (Ciências Jurídico-Filosóficas) which you have written as part of your law degree.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• If nobody submits: When no work is entered, or the jury finds none good enough, the prize goes instead to the best student in a subject of this field who scored at least "Good" (Bom).

How to apply

Please submit your written assignment to the Faculty of Law. For the academic year 2025/2026, the deadline for submission is 31 July 2026. Please read the competition rules (Regulamento) and the call for entries (Edital) before submitting anything.
