About this award / prize

UMA Merit Award

You will receive a one-off cash prize of five times the Portuguese national minimum wage, valid from the start of the academic year to which the award relates. The amount is adjusted annually in line with changes to the minimum wage. It is paid as a single lump sum by bank transfer and is not spread over several months. The prize is awarded by the University of Madeira (UMa) in Funchal. It is funded by the Portuguese Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation and paid out by the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES). It recognises a particularly successful academic year; consequently, the assessment is carried out retrospectively and no prior application is required.

Who can apply

  • University: You are enrolled at the University of Madeira in Funchal, Portugal.
  • Degree level: You are studying on a Bachelor’s degree programme, an integrated Master’s degree programme, a Master’s degree programme or an advanced vocational technical degree programme (CTeSP).
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: All nationalities welcome.
  • Results: In the year under review, you passed all the modules in your degree programme, achieving an average mark of at least 16 out of 20 (‘Muito Bom’).
  • Fees paid: Your tuition fees have been paid in full following the award of the scholarship.

How to apply

There is no application form. The university automatically assesses your eligibility based on your academic records. Amongst eligible students, a merit factor set out in the university’s scholarship guidelines determines the ranking, and the DGES decides how many scholarships are awarded each year. Scholarship recipients are honoured at a ceremony which takes place approximately one and a half to two years after the year under review.
