Erasmus mobility grant from the University of Madeira

You get a monthly grant of around 500 EUR to spend part of your studies abroad, for a stay of 3 to 12 months. The exact amount is set each year by the Portuguese national Erasmus+ agency and depends on which country you go to. You can either study at a partner university or do a work placement at a company or organisation abroad. You also pay no tuition, enrolment, exam, lab or library fees at the host university, and any national or local grant you already hold keeps running during your stay. The grant comes from the University of Madeira (UMa), co-funded by the EU Erasmus+ programme.

If you are already receiving Portuguese social assistance for low-income earners or have a disability, you can apply for an additional grant. You can also take part without a grant (a ‘Bolsa Zero’) and still retain all other benefits, such as exemption from tuition fees when studying abroad.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Madeira in Funchal and have no outstanding fees.
• Level: All levels of study, from Bachelor’s to PhD. Work placements are available to Bachelor’s and Master’s students.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Study progress: You have completed at least your first full year of study (approximately 60 ECTS credits).
• Nationality: You are a national of an EU country or a Portuguese-speaking partner country. Recognised refugees, stateless persons and those with permanent right of residence may also apply.
• Where you can go: An EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Turkey. You may not undertake a placement at an EU institution or agency, a body responsible for EU programmes, or your home country’s embassy or consulate.

How to apply

You fill in the registration form (Ficha de Inscrição) and send it by email to the Projects and Cooperation Unit, signed by your department's Erasmus coordinator. The application window usually opens in late February and closes in early April. Selection is based on your grade average, the courses you have completed, your language skills, your order of registration and your motivation.
