What the Erasmus grant gives you

You will receive a monthly grant of 500 EUR to spend 3 to 12 months abroad. You can either study at a partner university or undertake a work placement at a company or organisation. The exact amount depends on your destination country and is determined by the Portuguese Erasmus+ Agency. Furthermore, you will not be required to pay any tuition fees, enrolment fees, examination fees, laboratory fees or library fees at the host university. Any Portuguese national or local grants you are already receiving will continue and will not be reduced. The University of Madeira (UMa) in Funchal, Portugal, pays the grant as part of the EU’s Erasmus+ programme.

If you can provide evidence of financial hardship or a disability, you can apply for additional supplementary funding. You can also study abroad on a ‘zero grant’: without financial support, but with the same rights, such as exemption from tuition fees.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at the University of Madeira and have no outstanding fees.
• Study level: All levels, from a Bachelor’s degree to a PhD.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Progress: You have completed at least your first full year of study (approximately 60 ECTS credits).
• Where you go: An EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Turkey. As part of an internship, you are not permitted to work for an EU institution, a body that administers EU programmes, or your home country’s embassy.
• Nationality: You are a national of an EU country or a Portuguese-speaking partner country. Recognised refugees, stateless persons and long-term residents may also submit an application.

How to apply

Complete the UMa application form and have it signed by your programme director or your department’s Erasmus coordinator. Then send it to the Department for Projects and Cooperation (UPC). The selection process takes into account your grade point average, the credits you have earned, your language skills, the order in which applications are received and your motivation. The deadlines change every year, so please check with the UPC for the current dates for the relevant round.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a standard Erasmus+ mobility grant. The main requirement is simply that you are enrolled as a student at UMa and have successfully completed your first year of study. Consequently, most eligible students who apply and secure a valid placement will receive funding. As places and funding are limited and applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, applying early is definitely to your advantage.
