Erasmus+ mobility grant at Universidade Aberta

You will receive a monthly Erasmus+ grant to study or undertake a placement abroad at a European higher education institution or in a European company for 2 to 12 months. The exact amount depends on the cost of living in your destination country and the distance of your journey, and is set out in your Erasmus+ contract. You will receive 90% before your departure and the remaining amount 10% after submitting your final report. The Universidade Aberta (UAb) is Portugal’s public open university and runs this programme as part of the EU-wide Erasmus+ programme. Shorter stays are also possible: 5 to 30 days for a study placement or a blended option combining on-campus study with online learning.

Who can apply

• Your university: You are studying at the Universidade Aberta.
• Degree level: Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students are eligible to apply. Graduates may also apply for an internship abroad up to 12 months after completing their studies.
• Study progress: If you are a Bachelor’s student, you will have earned at least 60 ECTS credits.
• Fees paid: You have paid your tuition fees to the UAb.
• Field of study: Any subject is suitable, provided there is an exchange agreement in place for your region.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Extra support: If you have a physical, mental or other health-related disability, you can apply for additional support via the national Erasmus+ agency.

How to apply

First, check the list of UAb partner universities to see which agreements apply to your degree programme. Then complete the online application form for outgoing students and send it to the Office for International Relations. The UAb prefers applications to be submitted in June for the first semester and in November for the second. Once your application has been approved, you will sign a Learning Agreement and an Erasmus+ contract, which sets out the amount of your grant.

How realistic are your chances?

Anyone applying for a mobility placement is entitled to funding; there is therefore no separate scholarship process that you have to win. The real hurdles are of a practical nature: You must be studying at the UAb, have paid your tuition fees, meet the 60 credit point requirement for Bachelor’s students, and find a partner university that covers your field of study. If you meet these requirements and apply in June or November, your chances are good.
