About this scholarship

Erasmus+ mobility grant, University of Porto

You will receive monthly grant of up to 500 EUR to spend part of your degree programme abroad, as well as a lump sum for travel. The amount depends on where you are going: 500 EUR per month for countries with a higher cost of living, such as Germany, France or the Nordic countries; 450 EUR for countries with a medium cost of living, such as Spain or Greece; and 400 EUR for countries with a lower cost of living, such as Poland or Turkey. A period of study abroad lasts from 2 to 12 months, with up to 5 months fully funded. Furthermore, you do not pay any tuition fees at the host university, your credits will count towards your degree in Porto, and you will receive free online language support. If you are already receiving a Portuguese government scholarship (SASUP/DGES), you will automatically receive a supplement. The scholarship is awarded by the University of Porto as part of the EU’s Erasmus+ programme.

Who can apply

  • Your university: You are a fully enrolled student at the University of Porto and will remain enrolled during your time abroad.
  • Study level: Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students are eligible to apply. Bachelor’s students must be in their second year of study and have earned at least 60 credit points (ECTS).
  • Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
  • Nationality: You are a Portuguese national or hold a permanent residence permit in Portugal. Non-European students must obtain a valid residence permit before the start of their stay.
  • Grades: Your academic performance is good to very good.
  • Where you go: You are studying at a European partner university that has already signed an Erasmus+ agreement with Porto. Stays in Latin America, Asia or Africa are not eligible for funding.
  • No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other EU-funded grants and have no outstanding debts to the university.

How to apply

Applications are made online via the University of Porto’s SIGARRA system. You must submit an application form and a study plan setting out the courses you intend to take abroad. There are two application rounds per year. The first round closes around 31 January or 15 March, and the second around 30 October or 15 November. Your faculty will assess your eligibility and draw up a ranking list of applicants; a central university panel will then make the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is open exclusively to students at the University of Porto, so you will be applying within a single university. Porto is one of the most active Erasmus universities in Portugal and has ample funding available. Selection is based on academic merit and how well your study plan aligns with the programme. Priority is given to first-time applicants, students with fewer opportunities to study abroad, and students with special needs. If you have good grades and a clear study agreement, and this is your first Erasmus placement, your chances are good.
