About this scholarship

Vila Viçosa Municipality higher education scholarship

You will receive 180 EUR per month for 10 months (October to July), i.e. 1,800 EUR over the course of the academic year, which will be paid directly into your bank account. The money comes from the Vila Viçosa Town Council (Câmara Municipal de Vila Viçosa) and is intended to help the town’s residents afford their studies. You can combine this grant with other scholarships, provided that the total monthly amount remains below the national minimum wage (RMMG).

Who can apply

  • Where you live: You live in the municipality of Vila Viçosa.
  • Nationality: You are Portuguese.
  • University: You are studying at a public higher education institution in Portugal on a Bachelor’s degree programme (Licenciatura) or an integrated Master’s degree programme (Mestrado Integrado).
  • Grades: If you are starting a degree course for the first time, you will need an entry grade of at least 13 out of 20. If you are already studying, you will need at least 11.5 from your last year.
  • No previous degree: You do not yet hold a higher education qualification that corresponds to the degree programme you are applying for.
  • Financial need: Your household income per person per month is below the national minimum wage (RMMG). If a sibling is also studying at university, 20% is deducted from your assessable income.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Full-time, no job: You are a full-time student and do not have a paid job.

How to apply

Applications are accepted every year between 1 and 31 October. You can apply in person at the municipality’s ‘Balcão Único’ (one-stop shop) or online via its platform. A selection panel ranks applicants according to the lowest per capita household income. Students who received a grant in the previous year are given priority.

How realistic are your chances?

For 2025/2026 the municipality awarded 40 scholarships, up from 30 the year before. The Municipal Council sets the number each year.
