About this scholarship

Higher Education Scholarship of Tavira Municipality

You will receive 2,000 EUR for one academic year, paid as a lump sum (usually in September). The money comes from Tavira Town Council (Câmara Municipal de Tavira) and is intended for students from Tavira who are studying at a higher education institution. There are four types: a means-tested grant for low-income households; a top-up grant to bridge the gap if you are already receiving a smaller grant; a merit-based grant for outstanding academic achievement; and a special grant for students with a disability of 60% or higher. Each of these grants amounts to 2,000 EUR per year, although the local authority may adjust this amount.

Who can apply

  • Where you live: Your tax residence or your household is located in the municipality (concelho) of Tavira.
  • Level of study: You are enrolled on a career-oriented higher education programme of short duration, either a Bachelor’s (Licenciatura) or a Master’s degree programme.
  • No double degree: You have not yet obtained the qualification you are currently studying for.
  • Study load: You are enrolled for at least 60% of the annual credit points. The credit points you still need to make up from previous years amount to a maximum of 40% of one year’s total.
  • Age: You are up to 30 years old.
  • Field of study: Any topic is allowed.
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they meet the residence requirements.
  • Need or merit: To be eligible for the means-tested grant, your household income per person must be at or below the national minimum wage. To be eligible for the merit-based scholarship, you must have passed all your courses from the previous year with an average of at least 16 out of 20 (or 18 out of 20 at school for first-year students).

If you have missed an academic year due to a serious illness, parental leave, caring for a family member, a disability of 60% or more, or domestic violence, this year will not be counted against you. You may also apply if you are starting a bachelor’s degree programme abroad after having taken part in the national admissions process in Portugal and not been offered a place.

How to apply

You should submit your application using the local authority’s form, together with the required documents. For the year 2025/2026, the deadline was 11 November. There will be no interview. A panel will make the decision and publish a provisional list, against which you may lodge an appeal within 10 working days.

How realistic are your chances?
