About this scholarship

What you get

As a cadet at the Portuguese Naval Academy (Escola Naval), you study free of charge and even receive a salary whilst you are there. The state covers your tuition fees in full. You’ll also receive accommodation and meals on campus throughout the year, free uniforms, free textbooks and study materials, as well as comprehensive medical, surgical and pharmaceutical care. You will also receive a monthly salary that grows with each year of study, which starts at around 892 euros gross per month. This funding applies for the entire duration of the integrated Master’s programme, which lasts between 5 and 6 years, depending on the course. You can train to become a naval or marine officer, or study in the fields of naval administration, marine engineering or naval medicine. After graduating, you must serve for at least 8 years as a naval officer.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a Portuguese citizen.
  • Age: On 31 December of the competition year, you are 22 years old or younger.
  • Education: You have completed the 12th year of secondary school.
  • Entrance exams: You have sat the national entrance exams (ENES) for your chosen course, in the current year or the four years before it. Most courses require Mathematics A; the other subjects depend on the course.

  • Health and fitness: You can pass the physical, medical and psychological tests.
  • Record: You have no criminal convictions.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Naval Academy’s admissions platform between 22 June and 22 July 2026. This is followed by fitness, swimming, medical and psychological tests, as well as aptitude tests designed to assess suitability for military and naval life on board naval vessels. Your final ranking will be based on your school average, the results of the entrance examination and these assessments. The results will be published on 21 September 2026.
