About this scholarship
What the Bonaldo Stringher scholarship gives you
You will receive 27,000 EUR per academic year (before tax) for taking part in a postgraduate programme in economics and economic policy abroad. In addition to this sum, the Banca d’Italia (the Italian central bank) will cover the tuition fees charged by the foreign university and any termly fees, subject to the submission of supporting documents. You will cover travel expenses and health insurance from the scholarship. The funding applies to an academic year of at least 9 months. You may apply for an extension for a second year if your academic performance is deemed satisfactory. The Bank awards 3 of these scholarships each year. The winners and the top runners-up may subsequently be selected for a paid research placement at the Bank and sit an examination for a permanent position as an expert.
Who can apply
- Degree: You hold an Italian Master’s degree (laurea magistrale) with a top mark of 110/110.
- When you graduated: You were awarded the academic degree on 20 November 2023.
- Thesis: Your Master’s thesis is your own original work and demonstrates that you are capable of conducting academic research and thinking critically.
- Field: You would like to study economics and economic policy, and the degree programme you have chosen abroad is in line with this field of study.
- Nationality: You are a national of Italy or another EU country (some non-EU nationals may also be eligible under Italian civil service regulations).
- Language: A TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge or equivalent certificate allows you to demonstrate that you have a sound knowledge of the language used at your chosen university abroad.
- Age: No age limit.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online via the Banca d'Italia website by 16:00 (Italian time) on 21 November. You must submit your final thesis, a language certificate, a CV and a study and research plan in which you specify the foreign universities you have selected. A panel of academics will draw up a ranking of applicants; the results are expected to be announced in early February. There will be no interview.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is strictly limited: there are only 3 places, and applicants must hold an Italian Master’s degree with a perfect mark of 110/110 in economics, as well as a compelling research proposal. As a result, the pool of applicants remains small, but the bar is set high. The award recognises top graduates with an outstanding final thesis. If you clearly meet the requirements and submit a well-structured plan for study at a prestigious foreign university, your prospects are good.
