What you get

At the University of Glasgow, you will receive a comprehensive support package for your PhD studies. Your tuition fees will be covered in full, and you will also receive an annual living allowance (a scholarship), the amount of which is based on the rates set by the UK Research Council. For 2025/26, the scholarship amounts to £20,780 (approximately 24,000 EUR) and increases each year (£21,805 confirmed for 2026/27). The funding covers the entire duration of your PhD, which usually lasts three to four years. It is awarded by the Graduate School of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Glasgow. It covers both the home student tuition fee rate and the higher rate for international students, meaning that your fees will be covered regardless of which rate applies to you.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are applying for a PhD place (a research doctorate) at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering.
• Field of study: All subjects in the natural sciences and engineering at the College’s six faculties and its research institute.
• Where you study: You’re doing your PhD at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Applicants from the United Kingdom, the EU and other countries are equally eligible, and the scholarship covers tuition fees at both levels of study.
• Grades: As a rule, you will have a university degree with ‘Upper Second Class Honours’ (a very good 2:1) or an equivalent qualification from another country.

How to apply

First, find a supervisor and agree on a research project. Then submit your online application for the PhD programme at the University of Glasgow and indicate your interest in the scholarship in the ‘Funding’ section. The application deadline is 31 each year. Selection is based on your academic achievements.

How realistic are your chances?

Only a limited number of these scholarships are awarded, and selection is based on outstanding academic achievement. Consequently, competition is fierce, even though the scholarship is open to all nationalities. Your chances are best if you already have a very good 2:1 or better and have a supervisor with a clear project plan to support you. Make sure this is sorted out well in advance and apply well before the January deadline.
