About this grant / loan
Thornley publication grants
You will receive a one-off grant of about 950 EUR to cover the costs of publishing a work of historical scholarship that might otherwise not be published. The money is intended to cover the actual publication costs; therefore, please submit a brief breakdown of costs setting out how you intend to use the funds. The grant comes from the Isobel Thornley Bequest, a fund administered by the University of London to support the study and research of history.
Who can apply
- Field: Your work is history.
- Link to the University of London: You either hold a degree in History (Bachelor’s or Master’s) from the University of London, or you are employed as an academic or researcher in one of the university’s history departments or institutes.
- What is funded: The scholarship is intended to fund the publication of your work, not to cover tuition fees or living costs.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Career stage: Preference is given to candidates at the start of their careers; however, this is an advantage rather than a requirement.
How to apply
Please contact Dr Hannah Platts first to discuss your application. You should then submit a draft budget for the grant application. You must also obtain an academic reference, which the referee must submit directly by email. All documents must be received by 31 May; the Thornley Committee will make its decision in June.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is very specific: you must be working in the field of history and have a clear connection to the University of London, which means that only a small number of applicants apply for it. If you meet these criteria and can demonstrate specific publication costs in your budget, your chances are good. Early-career researchers are given priority, which is an advantage if you are still at the start of your academic career.
