Newton Trust PhD studentship

You get about 21,000 EUR per year for up to three years. This covers your PhD tuition fees at the University of Cambridge plus a contribution towards living costs. The money comes from the Isaac Newton Trust, a charity founded by Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1988. It is one of several named awards given out through Cambridge's central funding competition for PhD students.

Who can apply

• Level: You are applying for, or already doing, a PhD at the University of Cambridge.
• Nationality: You are a UK ("Home") student.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Grades: You have a strong academic record. The award goes to top-ranked applicants who just miss out on the main funding pots.

How to apply

There is no separate application. When you apply for your PhD at Cambridge, tick the box saying you wish to be considered for funding. This enters you into the university's central funding competition. The Newton Trust award then goes to the best-placed applicants who fall just below the main funding cut-off.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is narrow in one way and broad in another. It is only for UK PhD students at Cambridge, but open to every subject. You compete against the whole Cambridge PhD field. It goes to strong applicants who ranked just below the main funding lines, so a very good academic record is essential and a Cambridge PhD offer comes first. If you clearly meet the criteria and tick the funding box when you apply, you are in the running with no extra effort.
