About this scholarship

AFU Fellowship for Foreigners

For a placement of up to 6 months months as a junior doctor (internal medicine) in a French urology department, you will receive approximately 1,000 EUR per month. The amount will be paid in two instalments: 50% halfway through your placement and 50% at the end. Depending on the topic and the host team, shorter placements of between 1 and 3 months on a specific topic are also possible. The scholarship is awarded by the Association Française d’Urologie (AFU), the French Society of Urology, and enables you to develop your clinical and scientific skills in urology in France. Your airfare is not covered; this must be paid by yourself or your national urological society.

Who can apply

  • Profession: You are a urologist or are currently undergoing specialist training to become a urologist, and can provide evidence of your surgical and urological qualifications.
  • Career stage: You are a trainee (intern) and are about to complete your training, or you completed your training less than 3 years ago, or you have at least 3 years of verifiable professional experience.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities except French are eligible to apply; the scholarship is aimed at foreign doctors coming to France.
  • Mentor: You have a sponsor (parrain) in your home country who will write you a letter of recommendation and support your plan.
  • Visa and travel: You are applying for a visa, and your home country or the national urology society is organising your trip. You are not able to organise the entire stay yourself.

How to apply

Please send your complete application documents by post or email to the AFU office in Paris. These must include a personal statement, a letter of recommendation from your mentor, a description of the purpose of your stay and your career plan (both signed by you and your mentor), copies of your passport and visa, and proof of your surgical and urological qualifications.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very selective: you must be a foreign urologist with the relevant qualifications and have a mentor who is willing to vouch for you; a maximum of four scholarship holders are supported across the whole of France each semester. As the pool of eligible applicants is small, a suitable candidate with a compelling application has a genuine chance of success. A clearly defined objective for the stay and a committed mentor make all the difference.
