About this scholarship
What the AHRC Landscape Award gives you
You get a full PhD scholarship at the University of Birmingham. It pays a yearly living allowance of about EUR 25,900 (the UKRI rate of £21,805 for 2026/27). It also covers your UK tuition fee (£5,181 full-time or £2,591 part-time). The living allowance is tax-free. The awards come from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (part of UKRI) and are hosted by Birmingham's College of Arts and Law on the Edgbaston campus. They aim to support groups that are currently underrepresented among the College's doctoral researchers.
Who can apply
- Level: You are starting a PhD at Birmingham in the 2026/27 academic year, full-time or part-time, and based on campus.
- Background: You are a Home student (you pay the UK tuition fee, not the international one) from a minoritised ethnic background. One award is reserved for applicants in the School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion.
- Prior degree: You have a master's degree in a relevant subject, or you are about to finish one.
- Field of study: Your subject falls within the arts and humanities (the areas funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council).
- Research fit: Your planned project connects to at least one of the College's five research focuses: environment, creative industries, culture and heritage, inequality, or interdisciplinary work.
How to apply
One application covers this award, the College of Arts and Law Doctoral Scholarships and the Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships. You apply to your PhD programme and fill in the scholarship form, ticking which awards you want to be considered for. Applications reopen in autumn 2026.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is cut narrowly. You must be a Home student from a minoritised ethnic background, hold a relevant master's, and pitch a strong arts and humanities project. That keeps the eligible pool small, so a well-matched applicant with a clear proposal has solid prospects. A convincing fit with the College's research priorities decides it, so shape your project around one of the five focuses.
