About this scholarship
What the Ahti Pekkala Foundation funds
You get a research grant or a project grant from this Finnish foundation. The money supports work that helps the economy of North Ostrobothnia (Pohjois-Pohjanmaa), a region in northern Finland. The grant can also cover an educational or study trip. The foundation does not fix a sum. It decides the amount case by case, and you may get less than you asked for. It was set up in 1984 to broaden the region's economy and create jobs. The money is always tied to a specific research or development project. There is no personal grant for your living costs during full-time research.
Who can apply
- Who you are: You can apply as an individual, a company or an organisation. Individuals are usually researchers or students.
- Your topic: Your project must align with one of the Foundation’s objectives: Finnish economic development and foreign trade, research and development in Northern Ostrobothnia, or the promotion of entrepreneurship for the benefit of the region. Separate funding is available for research and training in the dairy sector, as well as for projects in the Raahe area.
- Level of research: PhD theses and research papers by individuals who have already been awarded a PhD will be given priority, but others are also welcome to apply.
- Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
- Language: You may write in any language, but it is best to write in Finnish. If you write in English, the committee will only have your cover letter translated, so the rest of your application may be misunderstood.
- Repeat applications: You can reapply even if you have already received funding.
How to apply
Applications are made via the Foundation’s website in two stages. First, you complete an online form. You then upload your documents as PDF files: a cover letter, a CV, a research, project, study or travel plan, and a balanced financial plan. The application deadline is once a year. The next deadline will be announced on the Foundation’s website in autumn 2026.
