What the Anke-Reese-Stipendium gives you

You will receive a one-off grant of up to 1,000 EUR grant towards an internship with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in South, South-East or East Asia. An NGO is a civil society organisation that operates independently of governments. The money can be used for your flight, a small allowance and similar expenses. The placement must last at least eight weeks and begin in the same year that you receive the grant. The grant is awarded by the Asienhaus Foundation in Cologne, which supports people from Germany who wish to become politically and socially involved in Asia.

Who can apply

• Age: You will be 35 years old during your work placement.
• Where you go: Your work placement will take place in a country in South, South-East or East Asia.
• The organisation: You are undertaking an internship with an Asian non-governmental organisation, ideally one that campaigns for social and political causes. Branches of international non-governmental organisations and companies do not count.
• Where you come from: You are a young person from Germany.
• Field of study: Any subject is accepted, and you don’t even have to be a student.
• Preferred: You intend to apply what you have learnt to social and political work in Germany. This is an important selection criterion, but not a mandatory requirement.

How to apply

Please complete the application form and email it to the Foundation. Applications are only accepted between 1 December and 31 January each year. Applications submitted before or after this period will not be considered. A committee will shortlist the applications, ask further questions where necessary, and reach its decision by the end of February, or by 31 March at the latest.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is presented to only a very small number of applicants. You must be under the age of 35 and organise an internship yourself with a politically active Asian NGO. As the pool of applicants remains small, a well-organised candidate who clearly meets the requirements stands a good chance. Securing a specific placement with an NGO at an early stage and explaining how you will put the experience to use upon your return to Germany is what sets your application apart from the rest.
