What you get as a language assistant in Spain

You will receive a monthly salary of 700 EUR or more, payable for 8 months from 1 November to 31 May. This is a paid position, not a scholarship. You will work as a language and culture assistant at a Spanish state school, helping pupils to improve their listening and speaking skills in your language. The exact amount depends on the region, and regions that pay more usually also expect you to teach more hours. You will teach 14 to 16 teaching hours per week under the guidance of a mentor teacher, who will support and advise you. The Spanish Ministry of Education is responsible for the programme. Health insurance will be arranged for you: EU citizens use their EHIC card, whilst non-EU citizens are insured through the Ministry or the region. There are two things you should bear in mind: your first payment may not arrive until the end of December, so you should budget for the first few months yourself, and travel costs are not covered.

Who can apply

• Level: You hold a university degree or are currently enrolled at university and have completed at least your second year of study.
• Nationality or residence: You are a national of, or have permanent residence status in, a country that has concluded an agreement with Spain. These include Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, the USA, Canada, Australia and many other countries.
• Language you assist in: German, English, French, Italian, Chinese or Portuguese, depending on the country.
• Age: You are between 18 and 45. You must be 18 by 1 January of the first programme year and below 45 by 1 January of the final programme year. Extensions are possible up to the age of 60.
• English or French proof (some countries only): If you are from certain countries such as Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Hungary, the Czech Republic, China or Singapore, you will need a level of English equivalent to C2. If you are from Morocco or Tunisia, you will need French language skills at level C2.
• Clean record: You have no previous convictions for sexual offences.

How to apply

Where you apply depends on your country. Applicants from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Malta, Switzerland and the United Kingdom should apply via a national partner organisation. All others should apply via the Spanish Education Office in their country and the Profex 2 online platform. For the year 2026–2027, the application window ran from 2 June to 30 June 2026. Please note that the next round will begin at around the same time.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a large, well-known programme offering school placements throughout Spain and a large number of places each year, so it is far less dependent on chance than a single scholarship awarded on a named basis. If you meet the requirements regarding qualifications and age, and can provide evidence of your language skills if necessary, your chances are good. Apply early and make sure your personal statement is specific, as places and popular regions are snapped up quickly.
