About this scholarship

What you get

You get a grant to spend one to three months at a research centre or university abroad, so you can strengthen your PhD work. The money covers 1,200 EUR per month for accommodation and living costs. You also get a travel allowance of up to 600 EUR within Europe or up to 1,200 EUR for the rest of the world. If your destination has no or insufficient Spanish social-security health cover, you get an extra 300 EUR towards health and accident insurance. The stay must run without interruption. The grant comes from the University of La Laguna (ULL) in the Canary Islands, under its own research training programme.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolled in a PhD programme at the University of La Laguna.
  • Enrolment timing: You were enrolled in 2023-2024 and continue in 2024-2025. If you already defended your thesis and did not re-enrol, you can still apply, as long as the stay took place before your defence.
  • No predoctoral contract: You do NOT hold a ULL predoctoral contract (a paid research employment contract). If you have one, you cannot apply.
  • Link to your thesis: Your stay abroad connects to the topic of your doctoral thesis.
  • Where you go: Your host is a research centre or university outside Spain.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply, as long as you are a ULL doctoral student.

How to apply

You apply online through the ULL electronic office, using your ULL username and password. Applications are ranked in open competition, so a strong acceptance letter from your host and a clear work plan matter. The 2024 round closed on 27 November 2024. The programme runs once a year.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut narrowly: only ULL PhD students without a predoctoral contract can apply, so the eligible group is small. With a total budget of 67,000 EUR and per-person costs of a few thousand euros, only a limited number of stays are funded, and the process is competitive. If you clearly meet the requirements and submit a well-argued work plan with a firm acceptance letter from your host, your prospects are good.
