Bangor China Scholarship Scheme

You will be awarded a fully funded PhD place at Bangor University in Wales, UK, with your tuition fees covered in full. In addition, you can apply to the China Scholarship Council (CSC) for a separate grant to cover your living costs, such as rent and day-to-day expenses. Bangor University and the CSC run the programme jointly for students commencing a PhD programme in 2026/27. There is also a joint PhD pathway for students who spend 6 to 12 months in Bangor; however, this pathway does not lead to a degree from Bangor University.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a citizen of, or have permanent resident status in, the People’s Republic of China.
• Degree level: You are starting a PhD programme, not any other degree programme.
• New students only: You are a new applicant. If you are already enrolled on a PhD programme at Bangor University, you cannot apply.
• Field of study: The programme covers a wide range of subjects from the natural sciences, engineering, the humanities and the social sciences.
• Grades: You have a track record of outstanding academic achievement.

How to apply

First, contact the relevant faculty at Bangor and a potential supervisor to check whether your research project is feasible. You should then submit a PhD application to Bangor University by 22 December 2025, stating that you wish to be considered for the CSC-Bangor scholarship. Bangor will inform you of its decision between late February and early March 2026. Whether you are offered a place depends on whether you are awarded the CSC scholarship, for which you must apply directly to the CSC between 9 and 31 March 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is awarded on a highly selective basis. You must be a Chinese national, be just starting your PhD and have an outstanding academic record, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is small. Whether you ultimately secure a place also depends on two separate approvals – one from Bangor University and one from the CSC – which is why it is crucial to secure a supportive supervisor at an early stage. If you meet the criteria and have a sound research proposal, your chances are good.
