About this scholarship
Barrande Fellowship Programme
You get a monthly grant for a research stay in the partner country. For a stay in France you receive about 1,704 EUR (40,000 CZK) per month. For a stay in the Czech Republic you receive about 35,000 CZK per month. There are two funding lines. A short research stay runs 1 to 3 consecutive months. A cotutelle is a PhD done jointly at two universities, one in France and one in the Czech Republic, with two supervisors. You spend several stays abroad over up to 3 years and finish with two diplomas, one from each country. The programme is run jointly by the French Embassy in the Czech Republic and the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports to build research links between the two countries.
Who can apply
- Level: You are a PhD student, or about to start a PhD if you apply for a cotutelle.
- Where you study: You are enrolled at a Czech university to go to France, or at a French university to go to the Czech Republic.
- Degree already held: You have finished a higher education degree before your first stay abroad.
- Field of study: All subjects can apply. Environmental sciences, energy, mathematics and information technology are especially welcome.
- Language: English is enough, as long as your supervisor abroad agrees to work in English.
How to apply
You apply online and follow the applicant guidelines, with a separate guide for the cotutelle and for the short stay. You need recommendation letters from your supervisor at home and your supervisor abroad. The deadline for the 2026 round is 29 January 2026. Shortlisted applicants give an oral presentation to a committee in February or March 2026. Results are announced in April 2026.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is cut narrowly. You must already be a PhD student at a Czech or French university and have a concrete research project agreed with a supervisor in the other country. That limits the field to well-prepared candidates, so if your project has firm backing from both supervisors, your prospects are good. A convincing oral presentation and a subject in the favoured fields help further.
