About this scholarship
What you get
The University of Barcelona (UB) covers all or part of your tuition fees if you cannot pay them because of money troubles. Instead of a monthly cash payment, the UB reduces or refunds what you owe for your enrolment, up to a maximum of 18 credits. There are two strands. One helps students hit by a sudden change in their finances, such as a job loss or a family emergency. The other helps students who must pay a surcharge for retaking subjects they already sat once, and in some cases the whole surcharge is waived. The amount is worked out for your own situation and credited against your tuition bill.
Who can apply
- University: You are enrolled at the University of Barcelona in an official bachelor's or master's degree. Affiliated centres, doctoral students, own-title courses and exchange students cannot apply.
- Financial need: You can show that you cannot pay the tuition fees, and that you would meet the conditions for the state grant (Beca General) or the regional grant (Beca Equitat).
- Grant link: You applied for the Beca General and/or the Beca Equitat for the current year. If a change happened after the deadline and you could not apply, that also counts. Refugees who could not apply for justified reasons are accepted too.
- No prior degree: You do not already hold a university degree. Exception: you are in your first master's, or in a second cycle of a pre-Bologna first degree.
- Non-EU applicants: You or one of your parents worked in Spain in the reference year and hold resident status.
- Cause of hardship: Your money problem was not caused by your own choice, such as moving out of the family home.
How to apply
You apply through the UB online form. For the 2025-26 year the deadline is 30 April 2026. A committee reviews the applications and may ask you for an interview or a social-services report. Bachelor's students are given priority over master's students.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is aimed only at UB students who can prove real financial hardship and who fit the state and regional grant rules, so the eligible group is narrow. If you clearly meet those conditions and can document your situation, your prospects are solid, especially as a bachelor's student, since they are funded first. Applying early in the long window helps, because the budget is limited.
