French Government Scholarship (BGF) - PhD research stay

You get about 1,700 EUR per month for a research stay in France of up to three months in a row. Your stay must fall between September 2026 and July 2027. You also get free health cover as a French government scholar, plus support from Campus France (the French agency for international students), including help booking a university room at a reduced price. The scholarship is funded by the French Embassy in Italy through the Institut français Italia. You cannot combine a BGF with Erasmus+ or with other scholarships from a French ministry or a public European body.

Who can apply

• Degree: You have finished a Laurea Magistrale or a single-cycle Laurea (equal to a master's) before the deadline.
• Level: You are enrolled in a PhD programme at an Italian university.
• Field: Your research is in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). No other fields are accepted for 2026-2027.
• Where you live: You live in Italy.
• Age: You are under 30 on the deadline day.
• PhD admission: You must pass the Italian PhD entrance selection (concorso di dottorato).
• Host lab: You have an acceptance letter from a French research lab that will host you.

How to apply

Fill in the online research-scholarship form and email your documents as one PDF to the Institut français Italia by 7 June 2026. A commission judges you on the originality and clarity of your research project, its scientific and social impact, and your CV. Results are announced on 11 June 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut narrowly: you must be a PhD student in a STEM field, live in Italy, be under 30, and already have a French lab ready to host you. That last point does most of the filtering, so if you already have a firm invitation from a French research group, you compete against a small field. Meet the conditions and show a clear, original project, and your prospects are good.
