Christos Vrakas Scholarships

You will receive 300 EUR per month, paid out over all 12 months of the academic year, to enable you to obtain a first (Bachelor’s) degree at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in Greece. The funding will continue until the end of the standard period of study, provided you comply with the scholarship conditions. Every year, five scholarships are awarded from the estate of Christos Vrakas.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled as a Bachelor’s student at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
• Field of study: Any subject area or department is fine.
• Nationality: You are a Greek citizen or of Greek descent.
• Age: You are 36 years old.
• Origin: Your family comes from Germa in the Kastoria region – either on your father’s or mother’s side, or via a grandparent. If no one from Germa applies, consideration will then be given to people from Vogatsiko and Kostarazi in Kastoria, with graduates of the Tsotyli grammar school being given priority.
• Grades: Last year, you achieved an average mark of at least 6.50 (‘very good’). If you are in your first year of study, you will need a school-leaving certificate showing a mark of at least ‘very good’, as well as proof of your enrolment.
• No double funding: You are not receiving any other scholarship for the same course of study from another estate, inheritance or charitable organisation. Furthermore, you have never lost a scholarship through your own fault.

How to apply

Please send your application and the required documents by 31 August to the University’s Estate Affairs Department – either by email or, by prior appointment, in person. Selection will be based on a written examination comprising two papers, each lasting two hours, on set topics.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is given to very few people. You must be able to trace your family roots back to certain villages in the Kastoria region, be under 36 years of age, and be studying at AUTh with very good grades. This means the pool of eligible candidates is small; so, if you clearly meet these criteria, your chances are good. The catch is the written exam, which decides which five places will be awarded amongst those who qualify.
