About this scholarship
What you get
You get a full-time work contract as a paid PhD researcher at the University of Seville (Universidad de Sevilla) while you write your doctoral thesis. The contract costs about 30,230 EUR per year for the first three years and about 31,870 EUR in the fourth year. These figures include the employer's social-security contributions, so your net salary is lower. The contract runs at least 1 year and up to 4 years, renewed year by year after an annual report. If you have a disability it can run up to 6 years. The university also pays your doctoral enrolment fees. After 12 months you can apply for short research stays abroad of 2 to 4 months, up to 3 stays and 9 months in total. Each year the university awards up to 30 of these contracts across five broad fields of knowledge.
Who can apply
- Degree level: You hold a university degree and do not yet have a doctorate.
- Where you study: You do your PhD in a research group at the University of Seville, supervised by a doctor from that group, and you enrol in one of its doctoral programmes.
- FPU link: You took part in the national FPU 2024 call, the Spanish state grants for training university teaching staff, published on 30 December 2024. Your thesis topic, title and supervisor must match what you submitted there.
- Field of study: Open to all fields, spread across five areas of knowledge.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply. When you sign the contract, EU citizens need EU-citizen registration and non-EU citizens need a Spanish foreigner ID number (NIE).
- No prior contract: You must not have spent more than one year on a predoctoral contract before.
- Disability places: 2 of the contracts are reserved for candidates with a disability.
How to apply
Your prospective supervisor first registers the project in the university's application system. You then apply online in the same system and submit the generated document to the university registry. For the current round (VIIPPIT-2025-II.2) the deadline was 15 September 2025. Ranking follows the score you received in the FPU 2024 evaluation, so make sure you can provide that scored evaluation certificate.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is cut narrowly. You must already have a supervisor and research group at the University of Seville and have competed in the national FPU 2024 call, and selection simply follows your FPU score. That means the eligible pool is small and largely self-selecting. If you have a committed supervisor and a strong FPU ranking, your prospects among the up to 30 yearly contracts are realistic. A weak FPU score is hard to overcome here.
