What you get

You get two monthly allowances while you do a health-care placement far from your training hospital. You get a transport allowance of 130 EUR gross per month. If you are a medical intern, you also get a housing allowance of 200 EUR gross per month. You can claim both together. This is a national French scheme run through the PAPS health-professionals portal, and it applies across the whole country, including Normandy. The placement must be an outpatient one, meaning in a town practice, a health home (maison de santé) or a health centre, not in the hospital itself.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are a health-care student (étudiant hospitalier) or a medical intern (interne) in France.
• Transport allowance, students: Your placement is more than 15 km from your teaching hospital (CHU). For a full-time placement it must also be more than 15 km from your home.
• Transport allowance, interns: Your outpatient placement is more than 15 km from both your teaching hospital and your home.
• Housing allowance (interns only): Your outpatient placement is in an under-served area (a zone with too few doctors) and more than 30 km from both your teaching hospital and your home.
• No double funding: You cannot combine the transport allowance with another scheme that already covers your travel. You cannot combine the housing allowance with housing or money from a local authority.

How to apply

Fill in the request form (one version for students, one for interns) and hand it to your teaching hospital's medical affairs office (direction des affaires médicales). You do not need to attach a public-transport ticket or pass.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition but a fixed legal entitlement. If your placement meets the distance and area conditions, you receive the money once you file the form. So your chances come down to whether your placement qualifies, not to being picked over other applicants. Check the current national PAPS page and your hospital, as the exact amounts can be raised by later ministerial orders.
