About this scholarship

Durham Undergraduate Bursary Scheme

You get a yearly grant of about EUR 830 to EUR 3,150 (£714 to £2,721) that you never have to pay back. It comes on top of your government student finance. The exact amount depends on your household income: below £30,000 you get the full £2,721; between £30,000 and £47,200 the amount slides from £2,720 down to £851; and between £47,201 and £62,410 you get £714. Durham University pays it in three instalments across the year. You receive it for every year of your course where your income stays below the limit, including years abroad and placement years. Your income is checked again each year, so the amount can change from one year to the next.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You study at Durham University as an undergraduate or on a PGCE teacher-training course.
  • Home status: You count as a "home" student, meaning you live in the UK.
  • Your degree: As an undergraduate, you do not already hold a bachelor's degree.
  • PGCE students: You have not received a Department of Education Bursary or Scholarship.
  • Financial need: Your household income is below £62,410, as assessed by Student Finance England (or the equivalent body in Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales).
  • Field of study: Any subject can apply.

How to apply

You do not apply. Durham University checks your eligibility automatically once it has your household income figure. If you qualify, they email your Durham University address, no later than 1 September each year.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competitive award. There is no selection and no fixed number of places. If you study at Durham as a home student and your household income is below £62,410, you receive the bursary. Your chances come down to meeting the income and status conditions, not to standing out against other applicants.
