Ernest Solvay Foundation grant for studying abroad

You will receive a travel grant and a monthly living allowance of up to 6 months, so that you can write your dissertation at a university abroad. The amount is not fixed. The Foundation determines it according to your circumstances. Deutsche Solvay-Werke established the Foundation in 1980, and it allocates around 50,000 euros annually to these scholarships for research in the fields of chemical and bioengineering. Projects focusing on energy storage, renewable energy or materials for electronics (printed electronics) are particularly welcome.

Who can apply

• Field of study: You are studying chemical engineering, process engineering, technical chemistry or technical biology (bioengineering).
• Where you study: You are enrolled at a university in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and would like to study abroad. Students from Central and Eastern Europe can come to a university in Germany instead.
• Study phase: You are in a later semester and are about to start writing your final dissertation (Bachelor’s, Master’s or Diploma).
• Grades: You have above-average results.
• Language: You have a good knowledge of the language spoken at your destination.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they meet the above entry requirements.

How to apply

Please submit the Foundation’s application form for a research grant. The deadline is always 31 December. Your stay abroad may begin no earlier than two months after this date.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very specific: only a handful of engineering disciplines are eligible, and you must already be working on your final-year dissertation and have very good grades. This means that only a few applicants are competing for this scholarship. If you fit this profile – particularly if your thesis topic is in the fields of energy storage, renewable energy or printed electronics – your chances are good. The annual budget is around 50,000 EUR, so a clear, well-structured application is essential.
