What the French Government scholarship gives you

For a Master’s degree programme in France, you will receive a monthly living allowance of 760 EUR; for a PhD programme, the allowance is 1,770 EUR. Funding for a Master’s degree is available for a maximum of 2 years, and for a PhD for a maximum of 3 years. In addition to the financial support, you will receive free health insurance (French social security), coverage of your tuition fees, a reserved place in a student hall of residence, a free visa and access to the services provided by Campus France. The scholarship is awarded each year by the French Embassy in Mauritius in collaboration with the Mauritian Ministry of Education. There is also a merit-based variant (bourse de mérite), which offers you the same benefits, with the exception of the monthly living allowance.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You must be a Mauritian national. If you hold both French and Mauritian nationality, you are considered a French national and are not eligible to apply.
• Where you study now: You can study in Mauritius, in France (including Réunion) or in another country.
• Level: After attending foundation courses or completing a Licence 3, you would like to embark on a Master’s degree 1, a Master’s degree 2, a PhD programme or a course at a Grande École (a selective French higher education institution). Your current course of study must qualify you for this next step.
• Field of study: Priority is given to engineering, medicine and health sciences, social sciences and economics. Applicants from other disciplines may also apply and will be considered provided there are still places available.
• Grades: You need excellent results and a clear study plan. It is an advantage if you complete your degree on time.
• Age (doctorate only): You must be under 35.
• No double funding: You must not have received either a PhD scholarship or any other French scholarship. Furthermore, you are not eligible for a second Master’s or PhD scholarship if you have already obtained the relevant qualification.
• Women: Applications from women are particularly welcome.

How to apply

Please send your complete application documents to the Ministry of Education in Phoenix, Mauritius, or submit them in person there. The next application round begins in March 2026; the deadline for applications is expected to be at the end of March. A joint committee comprising representatives from the French Embassy and the Ministry will review the applications. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview before the final decision is made.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship scheme is very narrowly defined: it is aimed exclusively at Mauritian nationals with outstanding grades in a small selection of key subjects. The pool of eligible applicants is limited, and the number of places is restricted each year. If you clearly fall within a priority subject area and can demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, your chances are good. Applying early and choosing a priority subject will both work in your favour.
