About this scholarship

Hungarian State Scholarships for summer courses

You will be awarded a fully-funded place on a Hungarian summer course. The scholarship covers your course fee, accommodation and full board (all meals). The courses take place between June and August over a period of 2 to 4 weeks, with the exact duration to be determined in advance. The courses cover three areas: Hungarian as a foreign language, Hungarian studies and thematic (non-language-related) subjects. You may select up to two courses in order of preference, but will only be admitted to one of them. The programme is funded by the Hungarian Government and run by the Tempus Public Foundation. Please note: There is no cash payment or pocket money, and you are responsible for covering the costs of your journey to Hungary, travel within Hungary and your return journey yourself.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are currently a student at a university, a graduate or in employment.
  • Age: At the time of applying, you must be at least 18 years old. There is no upper age limit.
  • Nationality: Your country must have a bilateral agreement with Hungary. This applies to most of Europe, as well as to countries such as Canada, the USA, Japan, South Korea, India, Mexico and Turkey. Please check the current application criteria for your country. Hungarian nationals may only apply if they also hold another nationality.
  • Where you live: At the time of applying, you must not be living, resident or working in Hungary, nor must you be present in Hungary at the time of applying. This rule applies to people coming from abroad.
  • Language: For courses taught in Hungarian, you will need some knowledge of Hungarian or, at the very least, B2 knowledge of English. For thematic courses, you must be able to work in the language of the course.
  • No double funding: You may not receive any other Hungarian state scholarship or EU scholarship for the same degree programme and the same period.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Tempus Public Foundation portal by 28 February, 17:00 Central European Time. Depending on your country, you will either apply directly or be nominated first by the scholarship office in your home country. Following a review of the application documents, the host universities will assess the applicants, and the Foundation’s Board of Trustees will make the final decision. The results will be announced in May.

How realistic are your chances?

Selection depends largely on your personal statement, which accounts for half of the total marks. Applicants who have a valid reason for learning Hungarian, engaging with Hungarian culture or taking a course that relates to their field of study stand out from the rest. First-time applicants and those nominated by their home country are given priority. If you clearly meet the requirements and can demonstrate a genuine connection to the course, your chances are good.
