What the IARU Student Courses offer

You get access to short, intensive courses at some of the world's top research universities, taught in English alongside students from around the globe. The courses are run by the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), a group of eleven leading universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, ETH Zürich and the University of Tokyo. Most run for one to a few weeks over the summer at a host university abroad, for example "China in the Global Economy" in Beijing, "Gender & Sexuality" in Copenhagen, or "Sustainable Water Management" in Cape Town. Note that these are paid courses, not a scholarship: you pay the host university's course fee, listed on each course page. IARU students get a 15% discount on the fees for the University of Tokyo Global Unit Courses.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at one of the eleven IARU universities: Australian National University, ETH Zürich, National University of Singapore, Peking University, UC Berkeley, Cambridge, University of Copenhagen, Oxford, University of Tokyo, Yale, or University of Cape Town.
• Study level: This depends on the course. Some take only undergraduates, some take undergraduate and graduate students, and one water course is only for Master's students in water, environmental or civil engineering.
• Language: You can follow courses taught in English. The exact level required varies by course.
• Field of study: Open to many subjects, though some courses target a specific field.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply. Each host university sets its own grade and other requirements.

How to apply

You apply directly to the university that runs the course you want, through the link on that course's page. Deadlines differ per course, mostly falling between March and June for summer courses. For example, the NUS entrepreneurship programme closes on 31 March and the UC Berkeley Global Access Program on 1 June. Each host university decides who is admitted.

How realistic are your chances?

The first hard filter is narrow: you must already study at one of the eleven IARU universities, so most students worldwide are not eligible at all. If you are enrolled at one of them, admission is decided course by course. Some courses screen applicants to keep class sizes small. Check the level and field requirements for the course you want, meet the fee, and apply by its deadline.
