About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive a full scholarship scholarship to study in India at Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD level for the entire duration of your studies. It is funded by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), an organisation of the Indian Government. The scholarship package includes a monthly allowance for living expenses and accommodation, your tuition fees, an annual allowance for books and stationery, and economy-class flights to India at the start of your stay and back to your home country upon completion of your studies. PhD students also receive a grant towards their dissertation. You are required to take out your own health insurance, with cover of at least 500,000 INR per year (approximately 5,300 EUR).
Who can apply
- Nationality: You are a German national.
- Age: You have achieved at least 18. The upper limit is 35 for Bachelor’s, Master’s, certificate and diploma programmes, and 40 for doctoral programmes.
- Level: Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programmes, as well as diploma and certificate programmes.
- Field of study: Most STEM and non-STEM subjects, as well as the performing and visual arts and traditional Indian medicine (AYUSH: Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, homeopathy). The following are not covered: medical and paramedical degree programmes such as nursing and physiotherapy, law, fashion design, and five-year integrated degree programmes.
- Where you study: You choose your degree programme and university in India yourself.
- Grades: Selection is based on academic achievement, so good school results are an advantage.
How to apply
You apply online via the ICCR portal A2A (admissions for alumni). Both your scholarship application and your university admission will be processed simultaneously there. The application deadline for the 2026–27 cycle is 15 April 2026. AYUSH scholarships may run until 31 May 2026. The Indian embassy or consulate in your country will make the final selection based on merit.
How realistic are your chances?
Selection is based on academic merit, but in the past the quota for students from Germany has often not been filled, meaning that a well-prepared application offered good prospects. If you meet the age and subject requirements, choose a suitable degree programme and can demonstrate good academic performance, your chances are good. Apply early, as the portal opens around the end of February.
