What you get

You will receive a one-off grant of 20,000 EUR to fund a Master’s or PhD programme abroad. The grant is paid out per academic year and covers up to two academic years. The grant is provided by the George & Victoria Karelia Foundation, a Greek charitable foundation based in Athens. In the 2025/2026 round, 20 scholarships were awarded for study abroad. The funds are intended to support postgraduate programmes in economics and related fields such as regional economics and development, industrial economics, shipping, trade and finance, business administration, public administration, environmental economics and agricultural economics.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Greek citizen.
• Age: You were born after 31 December 1994 (around 30 or younger for the 2025/2026 group).
• First degree: You have obtained a university degree in a field of economics or a degree from a Greek university of applied sciences or a technical faculty (e.g. the National Technical University of Athens or the Technical University of Crete).
• Grades: Your average mark in the undergraduate programme is at least 8.5 out of 10, or is equivalent to that of a foreign university degree.
• Admission: You have written confirmation that a higher education institution has accepted you onto the degree programme for which you wish to apply for the scholarship.
• Language: You hold a certificate confirming that you have a very good command of the language in which your degree programme is taught.
• No double funding: You will not receive any other scholarship or financial support for the same academic year, unless it is provided by your host university.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Foundation’s website. The deadline for applications is 30 June each year. The Board of Trustees selects the award winners and may invite them to an interview. The decision will be published on the website in mid-August.

How realistic are your chances?

The criteria for awarding this scholarship are very strict: You must be a Greek national, be aged under approximately 30, have an excellent degree in economics or engineering, have already been admitted to a postgraduate programme, and have achieved a grade of at least 8.5/10. This means that the pool of eligible applicants remains small. However, as there are only 20 places available for study abroad and the grade threshold is high, the foundation itself points out that competition is fierce. If you clearly meet the criteria and can demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, your prospects are good.
