University of Leicester Bursary Scheme (möglicher Nachfolger für einkommensschwache UK-Studierende)

Benefit

You get about 1,150 EUR (£1,000) in cash for each year of your course. It is paid at the start of the second semester. That means around mid-February if you started in September, or mid-July if you started in April. It usually arrives through your Student Loan Company account. This money comes from the University of Leicester itself for undergraduate students from low-income backgrounds, and you never pay it back. There is no limit on how many students can receive it. Medical students get it for their first four years only, because NHS funding covers the fifth year.

Eligibility

You qualify if you meet all the general conditions below and fit either Route 1 or Route 2.

• Where you study: You are a full-time, campus-based undergraduate at the University of Leicester.
• Fee status: You count as a home (UK) student for fee purposes.
• Previous study: You have not already completed a degree.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects, including Medicine.
• Route 1 (access programme): You finished an in-person progression programme, such as Access Leicester: Medicine or STEM, an in-person Sutton Trust Pathway (for example Pathways to Law), a UKWPMED partner programme, or Realising Opportunities. Online-only programmes do not count.
• Route 2 (postcode plus income): You live in a postcode ranked in the most deprived fifth of England (Index of Multiple Deprivation Quintile 1), and your household income is 30,000 GBP or less, confirmed through Student Finance.

How to apply

There is nothing to apply for. The university checks your eligibility automatically at the end of your first semester, using your UCAS and Student Finance data, and tells you by email. If you transferred from another university, contact the welfare office before the end of May of that academic year so you are not missed.

How realistic are your chances?

There is no cap on the number of students funded, so this is not a contest. If you meet the conditions, you get the money. The key is making sure the income check happens, which means being means-tested by Student Finance. You can request a 0 GBP Maintenance Loan if you do not want a loan. Sort that out early and, if you fit the conditions, the award follows automatically.
