Loughborough University Bursary

You get 1,000 EUR per year of your degree (about £1,000), paid straight into your bank account. You never repay it. You receive it for every year you are enrolled, including a Foundation Year and an integrated master's. In a placement year you instead get a 500 EUR start-up grant (about £500) to help you get set up. The money comes in three instalments across the year: November, February and May. Loughborough University runs this scheme to help lower-income students with living and course costs.

Who can apply

• University: You study an undergraduate degree at Loughborough University (Foundation Studies and integrated master's count too).
• Where you live: Your permanent home is in the UK, but not in Wales, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.
• Student finance: You have applied for a means-tested UK government maintenance loan through Student Finance England or an equivalent body. Means-tested means the amount depends on your household income.
• Household income: Your yearly household income is £30,000 or less (about EUR 35,000) after the means test.
• First degree: You do not already hold a first university degree (PGCE students are the exception).
• Consent: You and your sponsors, usually your parents, agree to share your household income details with the university.
• Other awards: From 2025/26, if you also qualify for the Care Leaver Bursary, Opportunity Scholarship or Sport Performance Programme Bursary, you get only the largest single award.

How to apply

There is no separate application. Apply for means-tested student finance and give consent to share your income details. Loughborough then checks your eligibility automatically each October. If you qualify, you get an email to your university account. The check repeats every year you stay enrolled.

How realistic are your chances?

You do not compete against other students for this award. If you study at Loughborough, live in an eligible part of the UK and your household income is £30,000 or less, you simply receive it. It is automatic and income-tested, not merit-based, so your chances come down to meeting the income and residence conditions. Just make sure your student finance application and consent are in place so the check can run.
