Dr Pauline Polkey Masters Scholarship (fuer UK-Studierende in MA TESOL u.a.)

Benefit

You pay nothing towards your tuition fees for your whole Master's. The exact value depends on your course fee, and NTU applies the reduction directly when you enrol. If you study part time, they adjust it at the start of each study year. Two scholarships are awarded each year. The money comes from the Ellis family and Exel Computer Holdings Ltd, in memory of Dr Pauline Polkey, a lecturer at Nottingham Trent University (NTU).

Eligibility

• Course: You hold an offer for one of these Master's courses starting in September 2026: MA TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Creative Writing, Museum and Heritage Development, History, Broadcast Journalism, Journalism, Magazine Journalism, or Global Media and Communications.
• Nationality: You are a UK national, with the United Kingdom listed as your country of nationality on your course application.
• New student: You are starting the course as a new student. If you already study at NTU, you only qualify when moving onto a new postgraduate course.
• Study mode: You study full time (1 year) or part time (2 years). Courses with a placement year are not covered.
• Financial need and grades: You need help with the cost of studying and can show strong academic potential.
• No other sponsor: No employer, government or funding body pays your fees. A Student Finance England loan is fine.
• Background bonus: You may be preferred if you come from a disadvantaged area, or an area where few people go to university (measured by Office for Students POLAR data).

How to apply

First get your course offer and NTU ID number. Then submit the scholarship application through NTU's online form, separately from your course application. The deadline is 16:00 BST on Wednesday 1 July 2026. An awarding committee decides, and you hear back within four weeks of the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

Only two scholarships go out each year, so this is competitive and not a sure thing. But the field is narrow: only UK nationals holding an offer for one of a short list of arts and humanities Master's can apply. If you clearly fit those courses, can show financial need and academic potential, and come from an area with low university participation, your prospects are solid.
